What it does
Enough to get your words down and out of the way. No workspace, no pipeline, no account.
Speech is transcribed on your Mac by models you install. No account, no cloud fallback. Once downloaded, they work offline.
Hold F5 while you speak, release to finish. Prefer a toggle? Change it in Settings, or record your own shortcut.
Nine built-in models from Apple, Parakeet and Whisper. Or connect your own API if you prefer.
Notetaker writes down your side of the call and, on macOS 14.2 or later, the other side, beside your own notes. Apple Intelligence or Ollama can then draft the summary, decisions and action items on your Mac.
Personal chats, work, email, everything else. Each can have its own tone. Casual drops the final period, very casual drops capitals, formal leaves your words alone. Styles apply to English.
Light removes English filler, repeats and false starts. Medium also edits for clarity with a local notes model. None keeps every word.
Say comma, question mark or new paragraph as you speak. Say scratch that to remove the last sentence. English only.
Add names and terms, or fix a word in History or just after a paste. DeepType remembers the correction next time.
Text lands in the app you were already using. If a field blocks paste, it is copied so nothing is lost.
Raw and corrected text stay on your Mac. Use Original brings back exactly what you said. History can be turned off whenever you like.
Words spoken, pace, cleanup saved, the apps you dictate into, and your streak. Counted from history on your Mac.
Updates install only after their signature checks out.
No account, no subscription, no API key. Download it and dictate.
How it works
Download DeepType, grant microphone access, and choose a local model. One time.
Put your cursor where you want the words. Hold F5 and talk.
The text appears in the app you were using, cleaned up and in your style.
Local by design
Models run on your Mac. Downloads happen only when you choose them. Your speech never takes a round trip to a transcription server.

Microphone lets DeepType hear you. Accessibility lets it insert text into another app. Apple speech also needs Speech Recognition. You control all of them in System Settings.
DeepType checks the target app before inserting text. If it cannot paste safely, the transcript is waiting in the dashboard and on your clipboard. Secure fields may block insertion.
It depends on the model. Parakeet TDT v3 covers 25 European languages, Parakeet Japanese covers Japanese, and Whisper covers more. Apple speech follows your locale and installed assets. Cleanup, styles and voice commands are English.
Only as much as you choose. Light, the default, removes English filler and false starts. None keeps every word. Medium also edits for clarity with the notes model you choose. Apple Intelligence and Ollama run on your Mac. Claude Code, Codex and API connections send the text to that provider, and only if you select one.
Yes. Notetaker transcribes your microphone as Me and, on macOS 14.2 or later, other apps as Them, beside your own notes. Afterwards Apple Intelligence or a local Ollama model can write the summary, decisions and action items on your Mac. Optional CLI and API notes models send the transcript to that provider.
